CAUP WEN YUAN Building in Shanghai

Project description

Cooperation project in the field of sustainable renovation and German building culture abroad - Chinese - German cooperation project

WEN YUAN Building in Shanghai
The building on the campus of Tongji University in Shanghai was erected in 1953 in the modernist style of the 1920s according to a design by Gropius students Xiongwen HA and Yuling HUANG. It is to be converted by mid-2007 for the "Department for Sustainable Building Design" at the College of Architecture and Urban Planning (CAUP).

As part of a national pilot project, a holistic energy and comfort-oriented refurbishment of the listed building is being implemented. The aim is to achieve a modern standard of comfort that meets current usage requirements while using resources sustainably.

Aspects of monument preservation are taken into account in a careful treatment of the building fabric. The result will be an innovative overall concept with a high demonstration character for future-oriented technologies. The clear architectural language is reflected in a lean, consistent technical concept. Lecture halls, offices and classrooms will be used to test, present and evaluate future technologies.
By the time of the World Expo "Better City, Better Life" in Shanghai in 2010, energy efficiency and user comfort will have been recorded and the results published. The Chinese-German pilot project therefore offers sponsors from the construction industry the opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities.
