Ground-breaking ceremony for new Dietenbach district in Freiburg

Chancellor Scholz praises project as a prime example of sustainable urban planning

The construction of the new Dietenbach district in Freiburg has started with the symbolic ground-breaking ceremony by Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Around 6,900 mainly affordable apartments for around 16,000 people are to be built here. This makes Dietenbach one of the largest urban development projects in Germany.

Together with Lord Mayor Martin Horn, Building Mayor Martin Haag, Nicole Razavi (Minister for State Development and Housing Baden-Württemberg) and numerous guests, the Chancellor gave the starting signal for the climate-friendly and colorful district with the ground-breaking ceremony.

EGS-plan Ingenieurgesellschaft für Energie-, Gebäude- und Solartechnik mbH has been advising the city of Freiburg on climate-friendly energy supply and sustainable construction since 2015. The energy concept developed is based on a low-temperature heating network that is to be supplied with groundwater and wastewater heat from large heat pumps. The connection to Freiburg's interconnected heating network serves to supply peak loads to the new district and to supply the existing heating network with renewable heat from the new energy center.

Building on the energy concept, SIZ energieplus is analyzing the possibilities for generating hydrogen and using waste heat in the context of the new Freiburg district as part of the "H2 districts" research project.

The Dietenbach district is a mammoth project that demands and promotes our entire interdisciplinary breadth and motivation.

In his speech on the long-awaited start of construction, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz said: "It should also start now, and it should therefore also be an encouragement that it starts here today with the ground-breaking ceremony, an encouragement to follow suit and to embark on the long paths and long journeys that are necessary to achieve this."

We are delighted to be involved in this promising project and look forward to continuing to work with the entire team!
